Insect bites are something that everyone doesnt want to experience. These bites are not only irritating and annoying but they can also be harmful and a serious threat to ones health. The good news is you can repel these insects to prevent them from biting. There are several insect repellents available in the market for this purpose. The bad news is not all insect repellents are effective in repelling insects. There are insects that repel insect repellents.

It helps to know the different types of insect repellents available today. These repellents are generally categorized into two types: (1) natural insect repellents; and (2) chemical-based insect repellents. In the former, you can also include natural homemade insect repellents usually made from natural herbs and plant oils. The latter is made from chemicals and synthetics where one of the commonly found ingredients is DEET or N-diethyl-meta-toluamide.

While chemical-based insect repellents are considered to be lasting and more effective than natural insect repellents, it is important to note that this type of insect repellent is not advisable to be worn long-term and in higher concentrates. There are already reported incidents of serious adverse effects and can be fatal when worn excessively. Natural insect repellents are considered to be safer with no harmful effects to the body.

To appreciate the importance of choosing the right insect repellent, you must understand how insect repellent works. They were not created to extinguish the insects; hence, they do not have the capability to kill the insects on contact. What they do is to minimize your risk to insect bites by hiding your odor from the insects. You see, insects bite because they are attracted to your smell or odor. They are able to feast on your blood when they have identified you through your body smell.

When you wear insect repellent, these insects find it extremely difficult to identify you as your body odor is on stealth. However, most insect repellents are good only for short distances and up to a certain number of hours. You will find the need to reapply the insect repellent especially when you head outdoors or in an insect-infested area. If you use a chemical-based insect repellent, you can just imagine at the concentrations of chemicals that can enter your system.

Natural insect repellents are generally safer than chemical-based although they may have a shorter efficacy period. You may have to reapply the repellent as needed. Creating your own natural insect repellent is a good option as you can control the ingredients that go into the repellent. The only downside is the time you can allot in the preparation of your repellent. The choice is really yours to make. If you go for the readily available insect repellent, it is always wise to read the label carefully.

Insect repellent has become a necessity to keep you safe from insect bites. It is just a matter of choosing the insect repellent that works safely while protecting you from insects that bite.
