Should You Use An Insect Repellent Spray, Or A Cream Or Lotion?
Insect repellent spray is one possible solution to the problem of protecting yourself from insect bites. It has the disadvantage that you can inhale the spray, but the advantage that it is the quickest and easiest way to apply the product, and this reduces the risk of aggravation to the skin. Many of the most effective forms of insect repellent are available as sprays, and provided you take care not to allow the spray can to become exposed to excessive heat, the cans should be perfectly safe to use.
Making the choice as to which insect repellent to use is not necessarily easy, especially if you are new to the subject and have never needed one before. There are basically two types of insect repellents, those based on chemicals and those using natural plant-based products, although there are many variations of each. It is the chemical based solution which is most likely to be available as an insect repellent spray, and these are the most powerful solutions to the problem. Chemical sprays need to be applied less often to confer the same degree of protection.
There is considerable controversy regarding the safety and efficacy of different types of insect repellent, so it as well to do your research and discover the truth before you make any purchase. The risks of chemical solutions such as DEET are exaggerated by many people, and the numbers of people who have suffered serious consequences as a result of its use are very small indeed. There is, however, a significant risk of impaired mental activity associated with the long term use of insect repellent chemicals.
Natural insect repellents are safer to use in this respect, but even they have been known to produce negative effects in some people. The most common problems are skin complaints resulting from prolonged use. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that natural solutions need to be applied at least twice as often as strong chemical based products, and in reality far more often than that. If you are determined to follow a natural course, it is important to try out different natural products to see which ones have the least effect on your skin.
If you have sensitive skin, then the use of an insect repellent spray, as opposed to a cream or lotion, may well be the best solution. It avoids completely the need to rub the solution into the skin, which can be painful if your skin is affected by burns or irritation. The hot temperatures which are usually present when you need an insect repellent can also aggravate any pre-existing skin condition. When it comes to insect repellents, there is no one solution which will suit everybody, but you can achieve the highest level of protection with a DEET based insect repellent spray.
